He’s trying to keep it in the family.
Austin Zoller (left) followed up his great first round score of 69 with a respectable score of 74 in windy conditions to lead the 2016 Greater Cleveland Amateur Golf Championship at Sleepy Hollow in Brecksville by two shots.
Zoller, who plays college golf for Winthrop University in Rock Hill SC, finished in third place last year in the Cleveland Am at Manakiki. His brother, Tyler Zoller won going away by a whopping 9 shots. Their father, pro Karl Zoller, was an Ohio Amateur champ, an All-American at Kent State, and won the Cleveland Open while on the Nike Tour (now web.com Tour).
So Austin has pedigree and game. The question is: can anyone stop the Zoller family juggernaut on Sunday?
Niko Anagnost (right) currently sits in second place two shots behind after steady rounds of 72 and 73.
Another two shots back at 147 are first round co-leader Ryan Stefanski and Doug Barber, who tied for the low round of the day with 72 (along with of Anton Krecic).
The next pack of challengers is six shots back, including 2016 Summit County Am champ Jake Appleby (pictured below). Six shots may be a lot to ask at a course like Sleepy Hollow, but it’s still in the realm of possibility. Should be an interesting Sunday shootout.
