Connor McCaulley and Tommy Miano, both of Stow, put on a windy weather scoring clinic at The Quarry Golf Club in Canton on Saturday, lapping the field with a four-shot two-player scramble victory.
The pair made four birdies on each side to shoot 8-under par 64, including birdies at the three longest, toughest par-4 holes on the golf course: the 8th, the 16th and the 18th. Their birdie on 16 netted them one of three skins won on the day. With the first place prize and the skin, Miano and McCaulley took home a tidy $1,373 and change.
Four teams tied for second place at 4-under par 68, a solid score for the wet and breezy conditions: Kyle Jones + Ryan Stocke; Andrew Malkus + Bobby Wadsworth; Joe Nemeth + Rob Wakeling; and Brian Smith + Ryan Stefanski.
Nemeth and Wakeling made eagle at the par-5 7th to earn a skin as well. Matthew Frey + Mike Fierst made eagle-3 on the 1st hole to round out the skin winners.
The weather in Canton was Ohio springtime beautiful for about two hours at the shotgun start at 9:30a: sunny, a medium breeze, upper-50s. But just before noon the winds picked up and clouds appeared, followed by a band of thunderstorms that moved through pausing play and dropping the temperature. Once the storms passed the sun returned for awhile, but the wind speeds were even faster and the temps were 10 degrees colder.
Given the tough conditions, the 8-under par score by McCaulley + Miano was stellar.
