Vaughn Snyder + Dave Oates Win by 3 at The Quarry
The “Summer of Vaughn” continued at The Quarry Golf Club in Canton on Sunday, as the reigning Northeast Ohio Amateur champion Vaughn Snyder paired with recent Stark County Golf Hall of Fame inductee David Oates to cruise to victory in the NOHIO.GOLF Series 2-Player Better Ball.
Snyder made two birdies and an eagle in the team’s first seven holes, then Oates tossed in back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth to separate their team from the field.
A string of pars at the first five holes on the back nine ended when both players made birdie at the canyon dogleg par-5 15th hole. Snyder followed with a birdie from 10 feet at the difficult par-4 16th to pad the lead, ignoring the trouble his partner found when hitting into the water off the tee.
A pair of pars to close was good for a bogey-free round and a three-shot victory.
Jimmy Wild of Sagamore Hills and Steve Blackburn Jr. of Mentor finished in second place at 5-under par 67. Team bogeys at two and six muted their front nine score to 2-under par at the turn, but they came back with a solid 3-under par on the back nine to finish three clear of T3.
Rain showers dampened competitors off and on throughout the day, but nothing heavy fell to stop play. The wind was up just enough to make The Quarry a difficult test, with the golf course in good shape for the event.
