The top-5 teams in the NOHIO.GOLF Series‘ second event of the season, The Quarry 2-Player Scramble, stacked up like planes headed for a landing at the airport: one after the other after the other.
Defending tournament co-champions Jimmy Wild of Sagamore Hills and partner Steve Blackburn, Jr. of Mentor finished as the leader of the squadron at The Quarry Golf Club in Canton, posting a scorching 13-under par 59 as their total.
Their outward nine of 28 — making birdies on eight of their first nine holes! — set the tone for the round. But the pair made only one birdie on the first four holes on the back side, cooling their momentum. That was until Wild chipped-in for eagle from back-right of the green on the par-5 15th hole to all but seal the deal for their back-to-back victory.
Showing the quality of the 60-team field, the winning score of 59 was only good by one shot.
Playing in the second group of the day, the team of Niko Anagnost of Willoughby and Dave Sotka of Chardon set the early pace to become leaders in the clubhouse. Sotka and Anagnost also crafted a front-side score of 28, but theirs included an eagle on the reachable par-5 seventh hole against two pars. But they made just four birdies on their back nine, with their closing three holes all recorded as pars, to post their 12-under par round of 60. That score sat at the top of the leaderboard as the target for just five groups, until Blackburn and Wild replaced it.
Ty Kovach of Medina and Allen Freeman of Brecksville came in for a landing next, finishing one shot behind second place at 11-under par 61. Their strong back nine score of 30 included a chip-in by Kovach for eagle from just off the front slope of the green at the par-5 11th hole, which earned the pair one of three $800 skins captured on the day.
The New Franklin pairing of Shayne Bishop and Bobby Spino captured the fourth position another shot back, matching the back nine 30 posted by the third place finishers to land at 10-under par 62.
Then another shot behind that in fifth place was the young newcomer team of Nolan Haynes of Barberton and Solomon Petrie of Akron, at 63.
Kyle Jones of Canton and Ryane Stocke of Columbus earned one of the day’s three skins with a chip-in for eagle on the drivable par-4 fourth hole. They also played Skins Game Defender later in the round, as their third-from-the-end group made eagle-3 on the par-5 15th hole to knock out the standing skin of the tournament winners, Blackburn and Wild.
Matt Gasser of New Philadelphia and Tim Hepner of Dover took the third skin of the session, making the only birdie of the day on the difficult par-4 16th hole.
The next event on the schedule is at a brand new site for the Series, the NOHIO.GOLF Oak Shadows 2-Player Better Ball at the gorgeous Oak Shadows Golf Club in New Philadelphia on Saturday, April 16th.
