Matt McAdoo and Andrew Bailey decided Sunday was a great day to beat the living bejeezus out of 60 guys at the 2018 NEOHgolf.com Tam O’Shanter 2-Player Better Ball in Canton.
Both men are former Cleveland State players. Both are proven local winners, as McAdoo has won the Cleveland Amateur and Bailey the Northeast Ohio Am. So the pair was primed and ready to go Sunday regardless of the early spring date, and it showed against what might have been a slightly rusty field.
McAdoo and Bailey went out in the first group of the day and posted a bogey-free round of 8-under par 62 on the challenging Dales Course. They lapped the field by a whopping four shots. It was a no-doubter posted big and bold at the very top of the scoreboard.
Sunday was the first truly beautiful weather day of Spring 2018, with sun, a slight breeze and temps in the 60s. The Tam O’Shanter Dales Course was in great condition, especially given the less than stellar weather thus far in April. Some of the hole locations might have been set a bit more toward “scramble tough” than “better ball gentle”, but that made the McAdoo/Bailey total score even that much more impressive.
After the run-away winners, it was a bunch of solo finishes for the next batch of top teams.
Finishing alone in second place at 4-under par 66 was the team of AJ Borisa and Steve Blackburn Jr. Adding to that second place haul, Borisa made a birdie at the super-tough par-4 10th hole to nab the team one of five skins won on the day.
Jimmy Wild and Zach Koinis finished in third place at 3-under par 67, and partners Kurt Peterson and Tom McBride took solo fourth at 68.
A pair of travelers from south-of-Columbus, Shannon Bartruff and Tyler Anderson, tied for fifth place and grabbed a skin to make their trip worthwhile. Also at T5 were veteran players Sam Spino Jr. and Dennis Toth, along with Jared Hirauk and partner Robbie Davia.
A full field of 30 2-player teams competed on the day.
