28 three-player teams scramble-battled at Skyland Pines Golf Course on a beautiful golf Sunday in Canton. And after this Northeast Ohio Golf scrum was complete, three teams sat tied at the top.
The team of Rob Wakeling, Mike Simpson and Dave Oates went off in the first group of the day and set the bar for the rest of the field. They posted a 13-under par total of 59 that included a sizzling birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie finish.
Two groups later, the team of Matt Gasser, Brian Gasser and Tim Hepner matched the leader’s 13-under par score. But they knew an outright win could have been theirs, as they made only a par on the short, straight-forward par-5 15th hole.
Then in the final group of the day, the team of Jim Cea, Bruno Chirumbolo and Bobby Spino took advantage of Jim’s length and strength from the gray tee boxes to also take a share at 13-under par. That team also had a chance to win outright but made par at the last.
Two teams finished another shot back of the winners: Ty Kovach, Ken Koprivec and Allen Freeman joined with Jimmy Wild, Zach Koinis and Kurt Anderson at 12-under par 60.
A pack of six teams finished two shots behind that at 62 in a tie for sixth place, good for $27 per team.
But the big winners of the event came courtesy of a holed lob wedge at the par-4 third hole. Shayne Bishop (above right) holed a 60-degree wedge from 48 yards out from just in the left rough to take the entire $1,680 skins pot on Sunday. Shayne shares the wealth with his teammates Troy Schonover (who hit the drive) and Scotty McVey (who cheered loudly).
Some additional kudos: Skyland Pines Course Superintendent Korey Waseman, formerly of Canton Brookside and Pepper Pike, had the golf course in unbelievable shape, especially for an affordable public track. The greens were ultra smooth, firm, fast and consistent. The fairways, tees and bunkers were all incredibly well maintained. It was a joy to play a competitive event in such outstanding conditions. Excellent work!
The next event on the Northeast Ohio Golf Tournament Series schedule is the individual Hawthorne Valley Stroke Play at Hawthorne Valley Golf Club in Solon on Sunday, June 3rd.
