“This is my first win ever in the state of Ohio!”
Those were the words from Green Bay, Wisconsin transplant Jake Frease after receiving congratulations as champion of the 2018 Chardon Lakes Stroke Play in the Northeast Ohio Golf Tournament Series.
The 21-year-old Frease best managed Chardon Lake’s difficult hole locations, tough layout, and greens that had a bit of bump to them from recent heavy rains. He did not have a double-bogey anywhere on his card — a common downfall for just about every other player on Sunday (sometimes much worse than double) — to win by a single shot at 2-over par 74.
Ian Hardesty (above) and Jimmy Wild (below) tied for second place at 75.
Hardesty and Wild both turned the front nine in 1-over par. Hardesty started a back-nine charge with birdies at 10 and 11, but was derailed by double bogies at 13 and 16. Wild birdied 11, but then bogeyed 13 and doubled 15.
Steve Blackburn Jr. finished solo fourth with a 76 that featured a tap-in eagle on the par-5 12th after a spectacular second shot.
But the shot of the day belonged to Austin Pierce of Akron. He fired his nine iron second shot into the cup from 162 yards out on the par-4 15th for his first-ever eagle — and a no-doubt skin.
