PREVIEW: 2024 Cleveland Metroparks Golf

Cleveland Metroparks GolfCleveland Metroparks Golf has set the schedule for its 2024 Player of the Year Series, with 15 competitive tournaments in various formats at six of their 18-hole facilities throughout the Greater Cleveland area.

The highlight of the Metroparks’ tournament season is the 54-hole Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship, which will be played this year at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Brecksville on Friday, August 9th through Sunday, August 11th. (The Cleveland Am alternates each year between Sleepy Hollow and Manakiki Golf Course in Willoughby Hills.)

Antonio Bodziony, 2022 Cleveland Am ChampionAntonio Bodziony of Willoughby is the back-to-back defending Greater Cleveland Amateur Champion (see the 2022 and 2023 results).

In advance of the Cleveland Am, CMG hosts five Qualifying Tournaments in conjunction with their Course Championships, so players may earn their way into the big event. The qualifying players join a host of exempt players who have earned spots into the Championship proper via top finishes in other major amateur events, from various association points lists, and other competitive criteria.

In addition to the chance to be historically named on the official Cleveland Am trophy, the John Fiander Cup, players compete for World Amateur Golf Ranking points based on their finish.

Cleveland Metroparks also hosts the Senior Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship as well, played annually at Big Met Golf Course in Fairview Park. Steve Abercrombie is defending champion of that event. There are also Women’s and Junior Cleveland Amateur Championship events scheduled.

Each event in the CMG Player of the Year Series awards points based on finish position to determine a season-long player of the year race in Championship and Senior Divisions. Andrew Malkus earned Player of the Year honors last year, while Allen Freeman took the Senior division title.

New for 2024, CMG will use the NOGA Live Scoring system at each of its POY Series tournaments, so players can see up-to-the minute results via Golf Genius as they compete in each event.

Players who wish to enter any of these tournaments can sign up at the Cleveland Metroparks Golf website.
