“It wasn’t even a fair fight.”
“It was like Fred was taking candy from a baby.”
Those were the comments in the clubhouse after the completion of play on Saturday at the Northeast Ohio Golf Stroke Play #5 tournament at Hawthorne Valley Golf Club in Solon.
Aurora’s Fred Miller played sharp steady golf, shooting 34 – 35 to finish at 1-under par 70.
With that score, he lapped the field by a whopping five shots.
Mark Borlin, Brian Beebe, Mitch Levingood and Eric Wonkovich all earned a share of runner-up honors at 74.
The weather cooperated greatly after rain all through the week and a dismal Saturday forecast likely hampered turnout. A cloudy day eventually gave way to some sunshine and a beautiful October afternoon.
And the Hawthorne Valley Golf Club course was a pleasure to play, even in its wet condition. The twisting, turning Donald Ross layout beat up many in the field even though it played at just under 6,500 yards. It’s the textbook definition of a tight, tricky, old-school Ross layout, worth checking out…
