Scott Heran of Strongsville (pictured above) overcame blustery winds, some tough hole locations, and a field of 50 players to win the Northeast Ohio Golf Stroke Play Event #2 at Chippewa Golf Club on Sunday.
On a sunny day where gusts blew at 25+ miles per hour across Doylestown, Heran jumped out to the early lead after a solid front nine of 1-under par 34. But bogies on three of his last five holes left Heran with score of two-over par 73 and unsure if that was good enough.
It was.
Chardon’s Dave Sotka traded birdies with bogeys on his scorecard — and even made a double on the fourth — but stayed in the hunt nonetheless. He turned at two over par 37, then added bogies at 12 and 13 to go to four-over on the day. But Sotka then made a critical birdie at the tough par-3 17th, which was good enough to finish alone in second place at three-over par 74.
Brian Polick made an eagle on the par-5 10th and nearly made a second eagle with a chip on the 11th that grazed the edge, and finished in a tie for third at 75 with Solon’s Mark Borlin, who played steady but without any fireworks.
The next event on the Stroke Play schedule, Event #3 at the new and improved Valleaire Golf Club in Hinckley, will be played in two weeks on Sunday, June 5th. This event will have an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, so the pace of play should be brisk and a big field is expected!
