Heestand Jumps Out to the Lead After the First Round of the Cleveland Amateur

After yesterday’s ‘false start’ from two sizeable downpours in the span of two hours, play went off without a hitch in Saturday’s first round reboot of the now-shortened-to-36-holes 2012 Cleveland Amateur Golf Championship at Manakiki.

Matt Heestand of Cleveland took full advantage of Saturday’s cool, wet conditions to punch out to a strong lead headed into Sunday’s final round shoot-out.

Heestand posted a solid 5-under par score of 67 to earn a two-shot cushion over current Manakiki course champion Nick Palladino of Highland Heights and former Tiffin standout A.J. Borisa.

Another two shots back — and the only other player to finish round one under par — is Dan Metzendorf of Medina, at 71.

Sunday’s second and final round will feature play starting off both the first and tenth tees, beginning at 8 a.m. Results and Sunday starting times follow:
