Through 11 holes on Sunday at Sleepy Hollow, Ryan Stefanski + Vaughn Snyder were having a pedestrian better ball day. They sat at 1-under par for their round, and they were getting crushed by Dave + Will Kurtz, who started with an eagle on the par-5 first hole and, after birdies at five and seven, turned in 4-under par.
But in the middle of the back nine Snyder went on a tear, making four straight birdies starting from the par-3 12th hole. Stefanski tossed in a birdie at the last for the pair to finish at 6-under par 65.
Team Kurtz, after matching the leader’s 6-under par total through the 14th hole with two more birdies of their own, seemed poised for victory. But it’s Sleepy Hollow — getting just one more birdie is easy to say, hard to do. Instead, the pair went backward with bogeys on 15 and 18 and ended up in a second-place tie with Brett Dubin + Lucas Libatore, who played consistently well all day, going bogey-free until the very last hole.
Kudos to Sleepy Hollow Superintendent Marc Pucky for tipped-out tees, tough hole locations, and great turf conditions. A tough but fair setup for a championship better ball.
Next up on the Cleveland Metroparks Golf tournament schedule is the Junior Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship at Seneca Golf Course in Broadview Heights on Monday, June 17th, followed by the Senior Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship at Big Met Golf Course in Fairview Park on Wednesday, June 26th and Thursday, June 27th.
