Three teams tie on a windy, chilly day at Turkeyfoot
It could be said Mother Nature won on a blustery day at Turkeyfoot for the 2024 season-opening 2-player scramble by the Akron District Golf Association, as low scores were hard to come by. But three teams fought better than the rest, and one team walked away with a huge skins payday.
A score of 7-under par 64 earned three pairs of players a share the victory: Kenny Koprivec from Canal Fulton + Jeff Mallette of North Canton reached that total courtesy of a back nine 30; David Oates of Massillon + Vaughn Snyder of Canton finished strong with three straight birdies; and Matt Stout from Shaker Heights + Ben Fisher of Avon started their day eagle-birdie to get rolling towards victory.
A whopping seven teams finished one shot behind the co-winners, with four more teams another shot behind that to finish in the money.
But the haul of the day went to Randy Crider of Brunswick and partner Jim Herchek of Chagrin Falls. An eagle-2 on the reachable par-4 10th hole led to a sweep of both skins pots, good for $1,860 and $2,000 respectively. Herchek, whose 69th birthday was on the day of the tournament, one-hopped a hybrid through the front bunker, and the ball plopped and stopped on the green about 10 feet away. Then Herchek buried the putt for the big prize. Several other teams had great looks to quash, but no one converted.
Saturday’s event marked the inaugural work of the new administration, as Kyle Jones and Jimmy Wild ran their first ADGA tournament after the retirement of long-time director Tim Davis. Everything about the day went smoothly, with a great turnout and a solid course setup. A post-event scoring assist from Matt Frey worked well, too.
