For the third consecutive year, Dave Oates and Vaughn Snyder grabbed a piece of first place in the Joe Ungvary Sr. Memorial Jumble at Good Park Golf Course in Akron.
In 2019, Oates and Snyder tied with Bobby Spino and Tom McBride.
In 2020, they won outright by one shot over three teams.
In 2021, Oates and Snyder shared the victory with two other teams: Steve Blackburn Jr. and Howard Clendenin; and Conor Mead and Brian Smith. All three teams finished with a total of 7-under par 64.
The Joe Ungvary Sr. Memorial Jumble is an annual event played at Good Park in remembrance of ‘The Czar’, an Akron-area golf hall-of-famer who won the 1993 U.S. Senior Amateur, among many other tournaments. The event is played in a format that features six holes each of Scramble, Better Ball and true Alternate Shot.
The top three teams in the 2021 edition took advantage of the Better Ball segment to separate themselves from the rest of the field. Smith and Mead won that segment with a 4-under par score of 19, while Oates/Snyder and Clendenin/Blackburn finished T2 at 20.
Mike Simpson and Ryan Gutowski finished solo fourth place, followed by the tournament namesake’s son Joe Ungvary Jr. and Rob Wakeling in solo fifth. Three teams tied for sixth place to round out the overall prize payouts.
The aforementioned Better Ball win by Smith/Mead was the only outright segment victory, as four teams split the scramble segment prize at 4-under par 20, and a whopping six teams split the Alternate Shot purse at 1-under par 23.
Two of the three Big Skins pots were sweeps that were well-earned, as it took a hole-out: Murray/Vastag holed out on the par-4 third hole to win the Scramble skins pot; while Pinto/Lungo holed out on the par-4 16th to sweep the skins in Alternate Shot.
The skins pot in Better Ball segment was split between four teams on two least-tied holes.
The two skins pot sweeps were good for $400 each, and each went to a team that didn’t finish in the money. So in 2021, the Ungvary Jumble wealth was spread around a good bit…
