The hottest golfer in Northeast Ohio — Chris Okeson — led the best team to the Northern Ohio Golf Association’s 2020 Interclub Team Championship at Canterbury on Monday.
Okeson has either won or been in the mix to win nearly every big amateur golf event in Northern Ohio this season. For the last few seasons, actually. On Monday, he added another medalist honor to that resume, posting a 4-under par 68 at Canterbury Golf Club to lead his Sand Ridge Golf Club team to a 2-under par winning total in the Interclub.
The aggregate of three individual stroke play scores counted for each four member team. In addition to Okeson’s 68 for Sand Ridge, Brandon Mihalo and Samuel Zimmer fired a pair of solid 73s to count toward the total, with Nick Fiori rounding out the team but not counting in the result.
Their 214 total was good for a two-shot victory over the talented veteran team from Quail Hollow, led by Tom Jereb and Brad Steven who each posted 70. Jeff Blechschmidt — who made a hole-out eagle on his first hole of the day! — added a 76 for Quail, with a 78 from Jeff Sawitke left uncounted. Quail Hollow was a favorite heading in, as they had won the stroke play event of NOGA’s 2019 Interclub series.
Brookside Country Club and Club Walden finished in a tie for third place, five shots behind Quail.
Okeson’s individual medalist honor was one shot ahead of Ryan Mallette, Zach Mandry, and Allen Freeman, who each posted 69.
The next event on the 2020 Great Lakes Auto NOGA Scratch Series Calendar is the Summer Four-Ball at Glenmoor Country Club in Canton on Monday, August 31st.
