Team Quail Hollow nipped Team Oberlin Golf Club by one shot in the first playing of the revised Northern Ohio Golf Association Interclub Championships at Mayfield Country Club.
Previously, the Interclub was a six-player stroke play qualifier followed by a series of team-vs-team matches. Starting this year, the new-and-improved NOGA Interclub is now three stand-alone events with four-player teams. Payouts and points are awarded at each event, with the points leader at the end of the season crowned NOGA Interclub Champion.
Interclub Championship #1 at Mayfield featured an aggregate Four-Ball format, with each Club posting two better-ball scores that were added together.
In warm and extremely windy conditions, Quail Hollow’s Tom Jereb and Brad Steven shot a strong 3-under par 68 while fellow teammates Jeff Sawitke and Kevin Huster posted a solid 1-under par score of 70.
Right on their heels, Oberlin Golf Club’s Brian Smith and Greg Thomas finished at 2-under par 69, as Ben Farina and Ben Hogan carded a 1-under par 70.
Team Beechmont and Team Canterbury tied for third place two shots behind Oberlin at 1-under par total for the day, while Team NEOH.GOLF Club took the last paid spot three shots behind that.
But easily the biggest winner on the day was Beechmont’s Ken Laurie (pictured). Laurie tossed a 4-iron shot into the cup at the par-4 15th hole for an eagle-2 to win the day’s entire skins pot of $1,300. Perfect timing for a hole-out.
The top-10 teams earned points from this event toward the season-long Interclub Championship total, posted below.
The next team event is the NOGA Interclub #2 Modified Stableford at Oberlin Golf Club, where the Stableford points earned by all four players will be added together to make up the team’s total…
