Mike Simpson made six birdies on his own ball at Turkeyfoot Lake Golf Links in Green on Saturday, pushing him and partner Dave Oates to a one shot victory in the Akron District Golf Association’s 2-Man Better Ball.
The greens were firm and fast and the hole locations were difficult. The wind blew with increasing strength as the day went on, and that wind mixed in a brief period of late afternoon rain.
The front nine played with extreme difficulty for everyone, as the top teams turned at just one or two under par. But two teams went low on the back side earlier in the day to separate themselves from the pack.
Oates and Simpson fired a scorching 6-under par 29 on the back nine to finish with a 7-under par total score of 64.
That nipped the team of Howard Clendenin and John Topeka who finished in second place at 6-under par 65; they posted a red hot 5-under par 30 on their inward nine.
The father-and-son duo of Dr. Jeff Mallette and Ryan Mallette took third place with a score of 67.
27 teams competed in the Championship Division.
In the Senior Division, Russ Rybka, who turned age 50 just last Monday, paired with Tom Ream to grab a one-shot win over a field full of talented ADGA players.
Ream holed a long, speedy birdie putt on the final hole, sweeping it in from the top of the green to provide the margin of victory, shooting 68. (Ream loves Turkeyfoot and this event: last year he holed his tee shot on the par-4 10th hole for an ace.)
It was a three-way tie for second place with a score of 69: Ed Marsinek and Dave Cutlip; Larry Lahnan and Monty Guest; and Tom Seever and Mark Thomas. 25 Senior teams played on Saturday at Turkeyfoot.
