Mark Borlin of Solon (above) was one of the last men to make it in at the Akron District Golf Association’s Hacker’s Shootout on Saturday.
On a chilly, cloudy day, players qualified from the Championship and Senior Divisions based on the number of birdies they made on the day in the 18 hole skins game. Borlin slipped into the field as one of the last eligible players, with three birdies in the Senior Division.
(On the opposite end of the spectrum, Kory Hall made seven birdies and an eagle to lead the way in the Championship Division. Wow.)
But once he was in, Borlin steadily made his way through the elimination process to reach the final hole along with Doug Fleming (left), who putted fantastically throughout the Shootout.
The final hole, the 170-yard par-3 ninth, was playing tough; it was not birdied by any player two times around in the earlier skins game. Fleming hit his tee shot short right, but had a straight-forward pitch. Borlin pulled his tee shot left, and it kicked long into the deep bunker for a difficult second shot. It looked like advantage Fleming.
But Fleming thinned his pitch shot across the green, leaving an opening for Borlin. With only the top of the flag in site, Borlin hit a spectacular bunker shot to two feet. Flemming couldn’t run in his long par chip, and Borlin tapped in for the victory.
