Three-time Greater Cleveland Amateur Champion Brad Steven of Concord (pictured in the cover photo) grabbed a share of the lead Saturday heading into the final round of the tournament on Sunday at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Brecksville.
Brad’s steady round of even-par 71 was the low score of the second day, and gave him a two-day total of one over par 143.
Pre-tournament favorite and defending champion Nick Palladino is tied with Steven at 143 after a shooting second-round 74.
Steven grabbed up some extensive greens-reading knowledge by securing the caddie services of Derek Duda for today’s second round. Duda, who plays Sleepy as much as anyone (and once swept the Cleveland Metroparks Fall Tour series!), caddied for friend Kevin Pruitt in round one as Steven had arranged for his nephew to tote on Friday. But D2 rejoined his fellow CSU alum Steven for the second round — and most importantly — will caddie for him again in Sunday’s final round.
Could Duda be the intangible necessary for Brad to earn a fourth Cleveland Am title? Will Palladino rally from a pedestrian second round score? Can Sotka stage a comeback from two shots behind? Can Kory Oslie, Dan Metzendorf or Matt Frey shoot lights-out for an incredible comeback? Some interesting storylines await the finale on Sunday…
Sleepy Hollow remained a challenge to the field for a second straight day, as 40 players bettered a score of 158 to make the cut for Sunday’s final round — a whopping 16-over par!
The greens are speeding up after the rains from Wednesday and Thursday, just as Sleepy Hollow Superintendent Chad Lewanski (pictured left) had hoped. Every player in the field should tip his cap to Lewanski when he sees him; kudos for the fantastic condition of the golf course.
