With a solid performance in regulation turning into a playoff victory against a veteran professional, Steve Weir of Berea earned the Lake Erie Golf Tour tournament at Pine Hills in Hinckley on Thursday.
Weir picked up his second victory of the year, the first also coming at Pine Hills early in the season.
Scoring conditions were optimum on Thursday, as a handful of players finished under par. Weir, along with Eric Frishette of Columbus, lit it up as both players posted scores of 7-under par 65.
Weir started his round off on fire, going 6-under par through the first seven holes, making 4 birdies and an eagle in that span. Weir then coasted his way through the remainder of the round before making a clutch 15-foot par putt on 18 to stay at -7 and ensure his spot in the playoff.
Frishette got momentum going with a couple early birdies, and then went on to make birdie on holes 7, 9, 10, 11, 12. A bogey on 17 brought Frishette back to 7-under, but a routine par on 18 put him into the sudden-death playoff.
Weir won the event on the first playoff hole with a par. Weir was awarded the previously guaranteed first-place prize of $1,000 even though the field consisted of only nine professional players.
In the amateur division, Zach Glassman of Highland Heights picked up yet another LEGT victory — his sixth of the year in the Am division — beating Drew Hanzel of Kent, OH on the first playoff hole. Glassman and Hanzel both shot 1-over par scores of 73 in regulation play.
