PREVIEW: 2016 Cleveland Metroparks Golf

John FianderFor 2016, the Cleveland Metroparks Golf tournament schedule reflects us listening to our players and doing what we can to tweak our already popular tournament season.

The biggest change is not actually a tournament: it’s the addition of the Senior Player of the Year point series.

Cleveland Metroparks GolfSenior players 50 years of age and older will earn points in both a regular and senior point series in all events, including the Senior Scramble at Sleepy Hollow (moved back to June, so as to not interfere with the Summit County Senior Am in August) and the Senior Greater Cleveland Amateur at Big Met in July.

But in turn, the Senior Am and other senior-only events will no longer count for points in the regular division standings.

We also had requests to expand our individual stroke play events, so a third one was added to the schedule, to be held at Shawnee Hills on May 15th.

Sleepy Hollow Golf Course BrecksvilleThe Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship returns to Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Brecksville on August 12 – 14. Players will find the course over 100-yards longer from the back tees since it last hosted the event in 2013. Players may want to preview the change in tee shots at #6 and #17 before the tournament.

There are several changes to the Cleveland Am exemptions list for 2016 as well. Exemptions will now be awarded to all players who have won an individual stroke play event either on our schedule or the ADGA schedule since last year’s GCAC. There are no longer exemptions for winning any ‘team’ events. Exemptions have also been added for players on our points list, and the exemption for World Amateur ranking has be increased to the top 1500 to include more local college players.

Finally, per a request from some guy who runs a local golf website (ahem), all ties will split merchandise credit money — no more scorecard playoffs.

The season is approaching fast. We look forward to seeing everyone May 1st at the first event of the Cleveland Metroparks Golf season, the Manakiki 2-Player Scramble!
