GIANT FIELD OF 260 PLAYERS EXPECTED AT WESTFIELD
With an entry deadline of Thursday, June 24th, officials expect a near-record number of entries for the playing of the historic 100th Ohio Open Championship at Westfield Country Club on Tuesday, June 29 through Thursday, July 1st.
David Griffith, Executive Director of the Northern Ohio PGA, said the field of professionals and amateurs is expected to reach or exceed 260 players.
The 54-hole tournament, regarded as one of the premier events in Ohio, returns to Westfield Country Club after a four-year absence while the club’s North and South courses underwent extensive renovations. The NOPGA and the club agreed on a one-year contract in August with both parties anticipating an extended agreement.
“Having 36 holes is a wonderful option for us and we are thrilled to be back at Westfield,” said Griffith. “Westfield has always been a great layout and the renovations have made it even better. The stage has been set for a fantastic event, fitting for the 100th anniversary.”
The Ohio Open, won by such greats as Jack Nicklaus (1956), Byron Nelson (1940-41-42), Tom Weiskopf (1965), Herman Keiser (1949, 1951), Billy Burke (1938-39, 1955) and Denny Shute (1929-30-31 and 1950), was played at Westfield from 2013 through 2016.
The event, sponsored by Pyramid Treating, was held at Weymouth and Fox Meadow Country Clubs for the last four years. Alex Weiss, a 25-year-old professional from Pickerington who has played on the LatinoAmerica Tour, won the tournament in 2020 and has entered this year.
Previous winners at Westfield were Tim Crouch (Mount Vernon) in 2016, Justin Lower (Canal Fulton) in 2015, Tim Ailes (Lewis Center) in 2014 and Colin Biles (Upper Arlington) in 2013.
Westfield opened as a 9-hole course in 1937. The South Course is the older of the two and will play to 6,774 yards and a par of 36-34=70. The North Course par is 34-36=70 at 6,733 yards.
