Golf Connect, the national organization behind a series of regional amateur golf tours including the locally run Ohio Golf Tour, has announced that they are merging with the Golf Channel Am Tour for the upcoming 2011 season.
How this merger will affect the format of the area events or who manages those tournaments is not yet clear. Typically, the Ohio Golf Tour ran 2-player team events with scratch and handicap divisions; the Golf Channel Am Tour features individual events by handicap and age classes. In both series, prizes consist of merchandise certificates exclusively, with prizes based on the number of local entries.
The Golf Channel Am Tour states it is the nation’s largest amateur tour for golfers with thousands of registered amateur golfers. But the membership fee is a very pricey $199 per year, which includes: competition in over 12 flights (including 6 senior flights) open to all skill levels; professionally-run events organized at top area courses in each region; a Membership Pack that includes Am Tour logo items; a USGA® Index and Handicap Index® Card; a Players’ Club website; and the chance to play your way to the Nationals at PGA West for a 72 hole National Championship.
