Oberlin Wins 2019 NOGA Interclub Championship

Shady Hollow Takes Stroke Play Title at Glenmoor

Northern Ohio Golf AssociationA single shot lifted the four-player team from Shady Hollow Country Club over the team from Oberlin Golf Club in the NOGA Interclub #3 Stroke Play Championship at Glenmoor Country Club on Thursday.

But that razor-thin setback didn’t stop Oberlin Golf Club from claiming the 2019 Northern Ohio Golf Association Interclub Championship from the overall three-event series.

The brand new 2019 Interclub format received universal praise from the players, including the test in the third event at Glenmoor that featured three-scores-of-four gross stroke play. No place to hide there, as should be the case in a big event finale.

Further confirming the wisdom of the new format, Oberlin and Quail Hollow Country Club came into the finals tied for the series points lead.

Quail Hollow captured the season-opener over Oberlin — by one shot — in the Interclub Better-Ball Aggregate #1 at Mayfield Country Club back in late May.

Oberlin and Quail Hollow flipped positions in the second Interclub event — by two points — in the Interclub Stableford Points 3-of-4 Aggregate #2 at Oberlin Country Club at the end of June.

Fittingly, those two teams were far enough ahead of the rest of the pack that one of them would win the overall Championship through their performance at the Interclub Stroke Play #3 at Glenmoor.

Oberlin Golf Club was a bit more up to the task.

Ben Hogan posted a solid 2-under par 70 to lead Oberlin, with Brian Smith (76) and Ben Farina (77) rounding out the team scoring. A pair of eights thwarted the efforts of Conor Mead to help better the team’s total.

Shady Hollow won Thursday’s event courtesy of team consistency, as star Kurt Peterson, Jim Armeni and Josh Clay went 73-74-75.

A sizzling 4-under par 68 by Silver Lake’s Tommy Miano on a super-tough Glenmoor setup had a bit to do with the final series results, too. Miano’s spectacular score propelled the Silver Lake team into third place at Glenmoor, leaving Quail Hollow in fourth place in the final Interclub event. A 77 by an under-the-weather Jim Durr and a tie at 81 by Mark Forman and Mark Guadagni set the Silver Lake team total.

Team Quail Hollow’s scoring came from Tom Jereb with a 75 plus a pair of 77s by Brad Steven and Jeff Sawitke.

Oberlin won the overall total for the three-event Interclub series by two points over Quail Hollow, 28 to 26.

Silver Lake earned third place on the season by a mere half-point over Shady Hollow, 20 to 19.5.

Tight. Down to the wire. Just like an Interclub was meant to be…
