Day Two saw the players take power back from the golf course, with many players making a run to get into the top 10 to qualify for the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship. Everyone’s excitement could be felt from the range to the first tee to the clubhouse afterward. The weather was warm, but the players persevered despite it.
The day began with 10 players within four shots of the leaders. Tyler Ankrom started the day in 24th position and proceeded to shoot a 69 to vault himself into the top 10 and secure a spot in the GCAC with a 6th-place finish. Not to be outdone, Andrew Malkus, who was tied with Tyler after Day 1, decided to go out and post a tournament-low round with a 67, putting him in the clubhouse with the lead and the number to beat.
At the end of the day, it came down to the final group and a staring contest to see who would make the first mistake. David Swab and Rick Deichert started the day tied for the lead at 1-under par. David started strong with a front nine 33, making two birdies and no bogeys. Rick suffered a double-bogey on the fourth then a couple of birdies to finish even. On the back nine, Rich made a couple of birdies including one at the 18th, but Davids’s front nine sprint and solid back nine play was enough to secure him a two-shot victory.
After we removed the pre-qualified players, 12 players from Shawnee Hills will be moving on to the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship at Sleepy Hollow on August 9-11. A score of 154 was required.
STORY OF THE DAY: Playing the 18th hole, Desmond Norris teed off and feared that his ball was out of bounds. He teed up a provisional just in case. He found his first ball and played it. But as the group made their way to the green, he couldn’t find his provisional ball. The group continued on to the green and found that he had holed out his provisional from the tee on the 330-yard par 4! Desmond, it’s not a hole-in-one, and it’s not even the best birdie you’ve ever made, but it is a great story!
