BOBBY SPINO BECOMES FOURTH AMATEUR TO WIN TITLE
New Franklin’s Bob Spino shot 3-under par 68 on Thursday to become the fourth amateur to win the Ohio Senior Open in the 39-year history of the event.
The event was shortened to 18 holes after inclement weather wiped out Wednesday’s opening round on the Fazio Course of Firestone Country Club.
Spino, who turned 59 on Thursday, edged by one shot his boyhood friend and another amateur, Dr. Jeff Mallette and professional Harold Wallace of McDermott to win the Main Division.
Pat Delaney, Head Professional at Reid Memorial Park in Springfield, won the Senior Plus Division (players 60-and-over) with a 2-under par 35-33=68. That was one stroke better than Perrysburg amateur Terry Tyson (34-35=69).
Spino, who owns Crest Roofing, took an early lead when he played the front nine in 4-under par 31 and closed by playing the back side in one-over par 36. His round got off to a great start when he chipped in for birdie from just in front of the first green, starting a streak of three birdies in his first five holes. Another highlight was a par-saving putt from about 17 feet on the par-3 14th hole.
Spino, club champion at Ohio Prestwick Country Club, becomes the first amateur to win the Senior Open since 2016 when Canton’s Nick Lambos prevailed with back-to-back rounds of 68-68=136, four under par.
