The final day of the Cleveland Metroparks Golf Match Play Championship came down to the 18th green at Shawnee Hills for both the A and B Flight matches.
The A Flight Championship Match featured Matt Paterini (the #1 seed) vs. Adam Prey (#7 seed). Both golfers were on their fifth 18-hole round of the weekend. The match was very tight, as the margin was never more than two holes up at any point.
Matt was 1-up through 17 holes, and both golfers had birdie putts at the last. Matt was away and his 25-foot birdie putt missed within inches and was conceded. Adam had a lesser distance putt that brutally lipped out, allowing Matt to capture the 2024 Match Play Championship.
The B Flight, which was comprised of the bottom half of the stroke play qualifiers, saw equal drama on 18 green. Devon Goldberg (#5 seed) and Brian Blankenship (#2 seed) contested another close match to settle the B Flight Championship. Brian pulled his drive and approach shot to the left side of the 18th hole, which can prove to be quite dangerous on the final hole at Shawnee Hills. But Brian was able to compose himself and chip in from off the fringe for a 1-up victory.
The A Flight consolation match was won by Andrew Malkus over Aaron Rich.
Thank you to all competitors who played a lot of golf in varying weather conditions through an exciting weekend at Shawnee Hills. We look forward to seeing many of these same players at the next Cleveland Metroparks event, the 2-Player Scramble at Manakiki Golf Course on May 18th. Thank you to Superintendent Brad Vecchio and his turf team for providing a championship golf course.
The following top finishers received a payout in Cleveland Metropark Gift Cards:
Matt Paterini – $370
Adam Pry – $250
Andrew Malkus – $105
