Lucas Liberatore Shoots 70 on Sunday at Sleepy to Win by 3
Lakewood’s Lucas Liberatore was the only player in the last ten groupings to shoot an under par round on Sunday at Sleepy Hollow, and with it claimed a three-shot victory in the 2024 edition of the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship.
Turning at 1-over par 36 at the difficult Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Brecksville on Sunday, Liberatore closed with a bogey-free back nine 2-under par 34 that left the rest of his competitors in the dust. His three-round total of 2-over par 215 included rounds of 71-74-70.
Second-round leader Brett Kaufman of Westlake made birdie at the par-5 first hole, but then made ten pars and seven bogeys from there for 77. Because Sleepy played so difficult (a Sunday scoring average of 77.18 by those who made the cut), he still finished in solo second place by three shots.
Fairport Harbor’s Ryan Chipps earned a solo third-place finish by posting a Sunday 72 and a 221 total.
Former 30-year Sleepy Hollow PGA Master Professional John Fiander presented Liberatore with the Cleveland Am trophy (known as the John Finader Cup, which stays at Sleepy Hollow) after the event, along with a customized whiskey barrel top for the champion to take home.
