NORTHERN OHIO PGA JUNIORS ROLL TO VICTORY IN THE FIRST JUNIOR OHIO CUP
The junior players from the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America put on a dazzling, two-day display in winning the first Junior Ohio Cup on the South Course of Westfield Country Club.
On Sunday, the 16-player team from the Section’s Junior Tour picked up where it left off on Saturday and rolled to a 16-8 victory over their counterparts from the Southern Ohio PGA.
The event pits junior boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 19 from the two Ohio sections of the PGA of America in a Ryder Cup-like event.
Starting the day with a 6.5 to 1.5 lead built during Saturday’s Four-Ball matches, the NOPGA went 8-5-3 in Sunday’s 16 singles matches.
For the second straight day, the girls from the NOPGA went undefeated and stole the show, winning seven of eight matches and halving another to clinch the championship before the boy’s matches even began.
Over the two days, the girls won 11 of 12 matches with one tie.
The SOPGA boys fared much better than its girls, winning five of the 12 matches with four ties.
NOPGA Junior Section champion Brooklyn Millard (Aurora) rolled to an 8-and-7 victory in the first match out. Gracyn Vidovic (Aurora), Serena Wu (Solon), Emily Burling (Hudson), Kristina Chill (Columbia Station), Annelise Stencel (Akron) and Alex Vardon (Akron) all followed with victories, several of which were decisive.
Hudson’s Julia Van Bokkelen kept the unbeaten streak alive when she salvaged a tie when she erased a 2-down deficit by winning two and tying four of the final six holes.
New Philadelphia’s Nathan Menapace provided the lone victory for the NOPGA boys on Sunday with a 6-and-5 decision, while Cameron Phillips (McDermott), Andy Steed (Wilmington), Zach Hartley (Dayton), Lucas Massa (Howard), Owen White (Tipp City) and James Wei (Dublin) won for the SOPGA.
