Avon Lake’s Scott Saari could have won the Senior Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship at least a half dozen times in past years. It’s likely he’s finished in second place more than any other player in the history of the event, coming close but coming up short.
Not this year. Not with a final round 66.
Saari made a whopping eight birdies against two bogeys in the finale — including birdies down the stretch at the 17th and 18th holes — to capture the 2022 Senior Cleveland Am by one shot over Akron’s Dean Cutlip and Solon’s Monty Guest.
Saari finished at 4-under par 140 after his first round 74, while Cutlip went 72-69 and Guest 70-71 to finish at 3-under par 141.
First round leader Mark Borlin of Stow started the day at 4-under par after his first round 68, but a 74 in the second round left him in fourth place.
Scott Abercrombie grabbed the fifth position after shooting 73-70=143, which gained him an exemption into the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship at Sleepy Hollow in August, as the top-5 in the Senior GCAC earn an exemption spot.
Cutlip was the low scorer in the 50-59 age division, while Saari won the 60-69 age bracket. Mike Brady won the 70+ age division with a score of 73-77=150.
Finally, kudos to Big Met GM Marc Pucky for the fantastic golf course conditions; the praise from the players over the greens and the setup was universal.
