FINAL RESULTS: 2016 ADGA Stroke Play Tournament

In most amateur tournaments, when a player makes a triple bogey and double bogey in the same round of golf, that player doesn’t win.

Nor does that player usually shoot even par for the round.

But Howard Clendenin of Seville did both on Sunday at Chippewa Golf Club, in the final round of the 2016 Akron District Golf Association’s 36-Hole Stroke Play Tournament.

Clendenin offset an unexpected triple bogey at the par-four fifth hole with birdies at 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11.

In golf parlance, they call that a bounce-back.

But then Clendenin made a double bogey at the par-3 12th, and followed that double with a pair of bogies at 14 and 16.

No worries: once again, Clendenin kept the roller-coaster on the track by bouncing back with birdies at 15 and 18.

That wild up-and-down round added up to an even-par score of 71 for the day, and a two-day total of 5-under par 138.

Clendenin’s stellar 36-hole total was good for a three-shot victory over Mike Simpson (pictured), who finished his two days of play at 2-under par.

New daddy Jim Krivanek also finished under par for the two days, at 1-under 142.

The Senior Division had a different kind of roller-coaster, one that dumped off a whole bunch of riders who tried to get on at 150.

Solon’s Mark Borlin posted 1-under par 70 on Sunday, and Akron’s Jim Cea shot 72, and both players finish with a two-day total of 149.

That left a whopping six players who shot a score of 150 out of the playoff.

On the first playoff hole, the long par-5 10th, both Borlin and Cea made par after missing mid-range birdie putts.

Then after decent tee shots on the 11th, Cea struck a great hybrid from the left rough on that par-5 to the back of the green, and Borlin missed right with his second shot.

Borlin hit a high flop way into the air, settling down to within 5 feet for birdie.

Cea rolled his eagle putt down the hill, missing just right by 4 inches, hole-high. He tapped in. When Borlin couldn’t negotiation his right-turning birdie effort, Cea was the Senior Division winner.
