Bobby Spino Wins 2014 ADGA GOY Tournament; Laubacher Takes Senior

Bobby Spino combined solid ball-striking with plenty of course knowledge to win going away at the 2014 Akron District Golf Association’s Golfer of the Year Tournament presented by Tire Source.

Spino, who is a member at Massillon’s Shady Hollow Country Club, posted scores of 71-74 to finish one-over par for the tournament, good for a three-shot victory over Aaron Crewse.

Another Shady Hollow member, Kurt Peterson, finished tied for third place with Howard Clendenin at 151. With his finish, Clendenin earned the 2014 ADGA Ungvary Cup as the leading points winner for the season, a couple hundred points in front of Crewse.

On the Senior side, a surprising development led to an eyebrow-raising finish. First round leader Jim Durr, who has played great all season long, injured his back right before the start of the second round and had to withdraw before he teed off. That set the stage for a shoot-out finish that no one seemed to want to win.

In the end, Tom Laubacher held on with scores of 73-78 to earn the victory by one shot over Fred Miller and two over Fred Martin.

Rick Bryson finished tied for fourth place, and that gave him enough points to win the Senior Division’s 2014 ADGA Barnes Cup by 52 points over Mark Thomas.

The 2014 ADGA season was a complete success. The association is on strong footing thanks to leadership from Tim Davis and Dave Chapple. Sponsorship was strong for the 2014 season and work will begin on 2015 soon. The players look forward to next spring!
