In just one round, a new name has emerged at the top of the 2012 Greater Cleveland Skins Game Leaderboard!
Mark Foss of Mayfield Heights cleaned up at Aurora Country Club on Thursday during the season’s first big “Double Down” event (double entry fees) — after calling his skin with his fellow competitors in the fairway!
Foss made the only birdie on the 336-yard par-four 11th hole by hitting his wedge to 18 feet and canning the putt, good for a solo skin worth a whopping $966!
Foss told playing partner Mike Angie during the play of the hole that he thought a birdie at the 11th would hold up, and he walked out of the clubhouse a very happy man, correct in his prediction.
Foss is a lock to grab one of the top-five spots at the mid-season mark to earn an exemption into this year’s Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship, to be played at Manikiki GC in August. The top five players in the Greater Cleveland Skins game earn exemptions.
Birdies tied-out on all other holes on the back nine except for the two par three’s and the par-four 10th hole, where nobody in the 21 man field made a birdie.
Pin shot winners were Mark White on the 12th hole (a head-high shot that ran up between the bunkers, no less!) and Steve Blackburn Jr. with an 8-foot result on the 17th hole, worth $147.00 each.
Next week, the Greater Cleveland Skins Game travels to Fowlers Mill GC in Chesterland, with play starting at 5 p.m.
