After a week of heavy downpours, wet and soggy were the conditions at Punderson State Park Golf Course in Newbury on Thursday.
And because of the soup the birdies were few and far between: only four of the nine holes were birdied by any player on the evening.
Two of the more “experienced” players in the field made the only skins of the evening, perhaps making it ‘senior night’ at the GCSG. And before play began, those two players sat at the very bottom of the 2011 Leaderboard as well, so both made their way up the list together.
Geoff Nicely knocked in a 40 foot bomb on the 210-yard par-3 14th hole for a deuce, and Steve Blackburn Sr. made the only birdie on the 400-yard par-4 17th hole.
Skins paid $149.50.
John Niedzialek grabbed the Mulligan’s pin shot on the 12th hole worth $52.00, while Joey DiDonato took home the pin shot on the 14th hole by knocking it 4 feet away — but missing the putt to help out Geoff Nicely. That pin shot paid $39.00.
Dave Sotka still holds the season-long lead while trying to gain his second career Thompson Cup.
Next week, the Greater Cleveland Skins Game travels to the Devlin Course at Quail Hollow Country Club in Concord, with play starting at 5 p.m.
