Uniontown’s Maxwell Moldovan, newly-turned professional and the most decorated player ever to come out of Ohio State, has entered the 103rd Ohio Open, enhancing the star-studded field of 288 that also includes reigning Ohio Amateur champion Andrew Bailey, of Shaker Heights, and 11 former Ohio Open champions.
The 54-hole Ohio Open, sponsored by Pyramid Treating, will be played Monday through Wednesday next week, July 1-3, over Westfield Country Club’s North and South courses.
Moldovan, who turned professional last week, is playing in the ATB Classic in Strathcona County, Alberta, Canada this week. The event, his second event on the PGA Americas Tour, is being played near Edmonton. The former Green High standout missed the cut by one shot last week in the Beachlands Victoria Open in British Columbia.
“While we understand Maxwell’s availability may be determined by his performance in Canada, we are looking forward to having him compete in the Ohio Open,” said Northern Ohio Professional Golfers Association Executive Director David Griffith. “He has entered and we will assign him a later tee time for Monday’s first round. We wish him the best of luck in his second PGA Americas event.”
Moldovan, who has played in three U.S. Opens, recently helped OSU to a third-place finish in the NCAA Championship, the program’s best finish since 1979. He graduated after posting the lowest scoring average (71.25) in OSU history and having the most career rounds at par or better (86) and having the most career rounds in the 60s (48). During his collegiate career the 22-year-old had four victories, 19 top-10 finishes and 31 top-20 finishes.
Moldovan’s presence would enhance the luster of one of the strongest fields in the Ohio Open’s 102-year history.
Bailey, a Cleveland State University graduate and member of Canterbury Golf Club, won the 117th Ohio Amateur by two strokes at his home course last July with rounds of 73-68-67-72 = 280.
