For the first 11 years, high school golf teams from Northeast Ohio have pretty much dominated the prestigious Kiely Cup invitational tournament at storied Canterbury Golf Club.
The 12th edition, which comes to a 36-hole close on Monday, has a distinctively different look.
Yes, Youngstown Boardman stands in first place after the first round with a score of 304 and Massillon Jackson is fourth at 310. But hot on Boardman’s heels are Centerville (305), reigning Division I state champion Cincinnati St. Xavier (306) and not far behind are Olentangy Liberty and Cincinnati McNicholas at 312 and 313, respectively.
Cincinnati Moeller and Dayton Oakwood, neither of which are in this year’s tournament, are the only schools outside Northeast Ohio to claim the Kiely Cup trophy in the past, named after Mike Kiely, Canterbury’s long-time caddie master.
Two-time champion Hudson (319), Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and Hunting Valley University School (320), four-time champion Walsh Jesuit (322) and up-and-coming Green (326) are next in the 15-team field.
Three players were able to match Canterbury’s par-72 to share the lead in the individual race. Boardman junior Brian Terlesky, the grandson of coach Ron Moschella and a state-qualifier last fall, was joined by Chagrin Falls senior Dan Berlin and Centerville junior Dhaivat Pandya on top of the leaderboard.
“If he could putt like his grandfather he would have been better off,” Moschella said in jest. “He had too many three-putts.”
That’s not uncommon for Canterbury, even though its greens were not running as fast as usual.
The field battled gusting and swirling winds all day and many found the 4½-inch rough non-negotiable.

Kurtz, a Kent State recruit, shot 3-over 75 as swirling and frequently gusty winds took their toll.
Supelak, a Cleveland State recruit, ballooned to an 80.
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s Charlie Toman (right), the runnerup in last week’s Hudson Explorer Invitational, also shot 75.
St. Xavier, which was unable to play a practice round, also had two players shoot 75 in juniors Cameron Frazier and Michael Prebles, both key components of last year’s state championship.
The tournament resumes on Monday, with the final round beginning at 8:30 a.m.
