On the strength of birdies on three of the last four holes, host professional Gary Robison shot a final round 3-under 68 on Thursday to win his sixth NOPGA Senior Professional Championship at Brookside Country Club.
The event is conducted by the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America.
Robison finished with a two-day total of even-par 142 to win by five shots over runner-up Dan Sutton, Director of Golf at Heather Downs Country Club in Toledo. Sutton, the first-round leader, posted his best finish in this event with a final-round 74 for a two-day total of 5-over 147.
Robison’s 68 was the only sub-par round produced by the field of 30.
Robison, 66, and Sutton, 52, advance to the Senior PGA Professional National Championship, which will be held Oct. 15-18, at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
They will be joined by third-place finisher and defending champion Steve Stone of Maumee Golf Center, and Canton’s Tony Adcock, who plays out of Seven Hills Country Club. Stone and Adcock came in at 6-over 148.
Steve Mulcahy (Shawnee Country Club), Rob Moss (Pepper Pike Club), Mitch Camp (Club Walden) and Kevin Sullivan (Brecksville-GolfTec) will serve as alternates, in the event one of the top-four finishers cannot make it to Florida.
Robison and Sutton were tied at 3-over par through 14 holes when Robison took the lead for good with a birdie to Sutton’s bogey on the 411-yard 15th hole. The decisive two-shot swing gave Robison some breathing room heading down the stretch.
Robison, the most decorated player in the 74-year history of the NOPGA, knocked his second shot on the 15th hole to six feet to the right of the hole and made a testy left-to-right putt for the third of his five birdies on the day. He closed by making birdies on the two par-5 finishing holes by making short putts.
