It was a beautiful day for golf at Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon for the 2024 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship Qualifier. The rain held off just long enough for a one-hole playoff to decide the final two qualifying spots.
But before that, Cincinnati native Robert Gerwin II claimed a two-stroke victory to earn medalist honors and secure his place at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, TN on August 24-29. Robert was the second tee time off the first tee, and after a bogey on number two, he bounced back with two birdies in a row. He would put up four more birdies in the round on his way to a 3-under 69.
The final two qualifying spots would be determined by a three-person playoff at 1-under par. The playoff would only last one hole as Joe Hillman would birdie number 18, and North Canton’s Jeff Mallette would make a par to survive and advance to the next qualifying round. Aurora’s Tom Laubacher was the odd man out.
The two got to the playoff in very different ways. Hillman, a native of Zionsville, Indiana, totaled three birdies on the round and only two bogeys. While Mallette, from North Canton, had more of an up-and-down path to the playoff with six total birdies, including a stretch of three straight, three bogeys, and one double bogey in his round.
