Kent State University Alum and Korn Ferry Tour player Ian Holt took home the medalist honors at the 2024 U.S. Open Local Qualifying Tournament for the Greater Cleveland area with a near flawless round of 66 at Weymouth Country Club in Medina. Holt took advantage of the afternoon tee time, which was a lot dryer than those who drew the morning times.
Holt made five birdies on his opening nine 32 on the backside. His bogey on the par-4 11th was the only blemish on his card. He coasted in with a 34 on the front side, which included zero birdies en route to a three-stroke victory.
Youngstown State’s Ayden Richmond was one of four other qualifiers who tied at three under par. Richmond went out in the early wave of times and braved the rain to post a 69 to move on to the next round of qualifying.
Two of the other three tied at 3-under par came from the same group in the afternoon. Cole Corder, former Horizon League Player of the Week and Wright State alumni, finished his day at -3 (69).
Former Queens University golfer and Amherst native Conor Mead put together virtually the same round, making five birdies and two bogeys.
Archbishop Hoban Junior Braden Herstich was the final of the four players tied at 3-under par. Braden started on the back nine and battled through the conditions posting a 37. He was able to recover nicely on the back nine with a 32, which included four birdies.
CM Mixon, a University of Louisville and Howard University alumni, came in with a two-under 70 and secured sixth place all by himself. CM started fast in the morning, posting a 33 on the front nine which included an eagle and no bogeys. CM did just enough to stay out of the five-man playoff for the last qualifying spot.
The final qualifying spot was determined in a five-for-one playoff. Former Toledo Rocket Dylan Van Fossen won on the first playoff hole with a birdie on the par-5 tenth. Dylan forced his way into a playoff with a birdie on seventeen. Taking advantage of coming right off the course and into a playoff, Van Fossen was able to battle his way into the next round of qualifying.
