Noah Kent was one of three players to take home medalist honors in addition to moving on to the next round of Qualifying for the 2024 United States Amateur Championship. The rising sophomore for the Iowa Hawkeye Golf Team put together a solid round that included four birdies and an eagle.
Another rising sophomore, Breckin Taylor of the University of Dayton, was able to match the 67 of his classmate. Breckin put himself in great position from the start of his round, posting a bogey-free 3-under par 32. Taylor followed up the 32 with a 1-under par 35 on the back nine to secure a tie for the day’s low round.
Adam Horn was at the top of the leaderboard all alone for most of the morning wave. The Wright State Raider was 7-under par through his first 14 holes, posting six birdies and an eagle in that span. Horn would bounce back with a par on 18 after three straight bogeys to claim the final third of the medalist honors on Monday.
Ajay Morris, who was the medalist at the 2023 U.S. Junior Amateur Local qualifier at Avon Oaks last August, punched his ticket to the next round of qualifying. The Arizona native posted a bogey-free 33 on the front nine and rode that momentum to post a 3-under par 68.
Ali Khan claimed his spot in the next round of qualifying by bouncing back after some adversity. After each bogey Khan made on the front nine, he was able to come right back and birdie the following hole. The Ball State University Golf Team rising Senior took the momentum and ran, posting a bogey-free 3-under par on the back nine.
Chris Pollak, who will be entering his Senior year at Hoban in Akron, locked up a spot in the next round of qualifying by making birdie on three of his final five holes. The Florida Southern College commit put himself two stokes above any potential playoff with a huge par on his final hole of the day.
Tyler Groomes, a member of The Ohio State University Golf Team, posted a consistent 34-34 to qualify on Monday. The Dublin native birdied three of his first seven holes to set himself up to claim one of the twelve spots.
Yuqi Liu of the University of Michigan Golf Team was the second player in his group to move on to the next round of qualifying. Liu, a native of Beijing, China had five birdies in his first twelve holes to put himself in position to continue to play for a spot at Hazeltine.
Julian Menser, who is coming off a Michigan High School Division 1 State Championship for Detroit Central Catholic, was able to move onto the next round with a 2-under par 69. The Michigan State University commit was impressive today, posting five birdies and an eagle.
Connor Gdovin of the Bowling Green Men’s Golf Team had six birdies on the day after starting later in the day than any other qualifier. The Mayfield native entered the 18th hole needing only a bogey to claim the final qualifying spot and avoid a lengthy playoff, which he was able to do.
John Angelo of the Gleneagles Golf Club was able to find his game at the right time this afternoon. After two straight bogeys to open up his back nine, Angelo would go bogey-free with birdies in three of his last five holes to qualify by one stroke.
Kyle Smith, a Canton native, posted a round of 2-under par that included four birdies and an eagle. Smith, a member of the Xavier University Men’s Golf Team was able to do so in just his first eleven holes, which would prove to be just enough to move on.
Final Qualifying runs from July 15th – July 31st at 19 locations nationwide, including the Ohio State University Scarlet Course on Wednesday, July 17th.
