Pro Mike Van Sickle, Am Ryan Gutowski Share Title; Tim Ailes Wins Senior Pro, Howard Clendenin Senior Am
The players in the morning wave of the 73rd Tigertown Open set the pace for three of the four divisions, including the day’s co-champions.
Pittsburgh professional Mike Van Sickle and Akron amateur Ryan Gutowski both finished the tournament with a total of 7-under par 65 to earn a share of the Tigertown title. Van Sickle wins the guaranteed $5,000 first-place professional prize payout, while Gutowski tops the amateur payouts with $740.
The margin of victory between the two co-champions’ divisions was a good bit different.
Van Sickle won by a single shot over three other professionals: former University of Findlay golfer Tanner Grzegorczyk from Glenshaw, PA; Canton’s Logan Lagodich; and two-time past Tigertown Open champion Blake Sattler of New Philadelphia, who made a great run at a tying birdie putt on the 18th that finished just wide.
The Amateur Division won by Gutowski was not nearly as close, as the former University of Akron golfer finished clear of his closest pursuers by four shots. Fairlawn’s Shaun Kloetzer, Akron’s Lucas Murray, and Rendall Weaver of Sugarcreek all shot 3-under par 69 to finish T2.
Senior Professional Division
In the Senior Professional Division, Tim Ailes from Lewis Center shot 5-under par 67 to win by a single shot over defending Pro and Senior Pro champion Paul Wackerly of Minerva. The two played together, and Ailes had a two-shot lead over Wackerly heading into the par-4 finishing hole. Ailes made bogey to top the morning wave competitors by one, but none of the Senior Pros in the afternoon wave could best that score. Ailes won $1,500 for his efforts.
Senior Amateur Division
The Senior Amateur Division featured a blow-out win by a red-hot player in the afternoon wave. Howard Clendenin of Fairlawn ripped off a bogey-free round of 9-under par 63, which included seven birdies and an eagle on the par-5 third. The Senior Am division plays up one set of tees from the other three divisions in the tournament, so the score is not eligible to be considered for the overall Tigertown Open title. But the round put together by Clendenin was impressive, and it earned him a four-shot victory over the reigning Ohio Senior Open champion, Bobby Spino of New Franklin.
Shot of the Day
The shot of the day belonged to professional Dylan Van Fossen of Norwich, Ohio. Dylan made a hole-in-one on the par-3 second hole on his way to a 69 and a tie for sixth place.
Prize and skins payouts will be sent to all players starting on Monday. Payouts for the top-5 players in each division will be made by mailed check.
