Incoming freshmen dominate OGGF Showcase
The future of girls’ golf in Ohio looks brighter than ever, as two incoming high school freshmen made headlines at the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation Showcase on July 22 at Avon Oaks Country Club. The tournament is always a great preview of the upcoming high school golf season, as the Showcase has been serving as the unofficial kickoff for the past 23 years.
Winning the tournament this year was incoming Brunswick freshman Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble, who shot four under par 68, scoring seven birdies along the way.
Madolyn Kost of Kent Roosevelt shot 69 to finish second, while Cammy Reed of Magnificat shot even-par 72 to take third place.
Also playing in her first high school tournament, Kellan Gleason scored her first hole-in-one on the eighth. Gleason, an Avon resident, will be attending Magnificat High School this fall.
“After seeing the girls play today, I predict a highly competitive girls’ high school golf season this year,” says OGGF Executive Director Lynne Plaisance. “We were thrilled to host 12 high school teams, along with 26 girls playing as individuals from across the state. In addition to an 18-hole tournament, the girls also had an opportunity to hone their game as we assembled past LPGA Tour players, local PGA and LPGA professionals, and golf industry leaders all in one location to share their expertise.”
Clinics included a rules seminar, bunker shot techniques, and an on-course clinic led by tournament headliners LPGA tour professionals Barb Mucha and Janice Moodie, which explored the importance of the mental process to the game.
“This is a game of honor and integrity no matter what level you play at,” says Mucha, a Parma Heights native who won five LPGA Tournaments during her career.
Team Champions
In a repeat performance, Magnificat High School won top team honors, followed by Hudson High School and Brunswick High School. Four of Magnificat’s players finished in the top 6.
Other teams competing in the event included Aurora, Avon, Chagrin Falls, Edison, Lake Catholic, Olmsted Falls, Rocky River, St. Joseph Academy, Shaker Heights and Southern Local.
