Jordan Rogers and Steven Sveda teed off early Sunday, got a lead then held on with a 64 to be low team in the Belleria Pizza Spring 2-player at Links at Firestone Farms.
Forty teams from the Valley, Cleveland, Akron and Pittsburgh competed. The event kicked off the 14th summer of The Greatest Golfer.
Rogers/Sveda edged out by a shot the formidable pair of Garrett Frank + Griffin Todd, who said a par on a par-5 was a hole they wished they had back. The teams of Jason Dickey + Blake Prince and Dave Morgan + John Talbot carded 66s to tie for 3rd.
In Flight B, Billy and Charles Loomis brothered up for a 71 to win their flight by a shot over three teams: Randy and Bill Braham (more brothers), and Brandon Schmitt and Matthew May, and the father-son duo of Jay and Sky Pappas.
Flight C saw a tie at 72 between the Chad Bailey / Tim Snow team and the Jeff Mast + Jeff Meyers team. Mast was a unique highlight of the day (see it on Instagram) doffing the socks and shoes to go knee-deep in a pond to salvage par. It didn’t work. But it made for great video. Splitting 3rd place with a 74 were the teams of Donald DiClaudio + Nick Shelton and Paul Keller + Aaron Meyers.
Next weekend, Greatest continues with ‘Joe’ Dickey Junior play beginning at The Lake Club.
