The Northern Ohio PGA hosted the Firestone Junior Cup at Firestone Country Club’s Fazio Course for the third year in a row today, in conjunction with the Kaulig Companies Championship. Eight teams from around Northern Ohio were invited to attend a day of activities: Westfield Country Club, Portage Country Club, Glenmoor Country Club, Barrington Golf Club, Jimmy Beers Golf, Silver Lake Country Club, Mayfield Country Club, and The Turn.
The day started with a short game clinic, sponsored by the JM Smucker Company, with Kaulig Companies Championship participant and ten-time professional champion, Richard Green. Green hit shots from around the 18th green of the Fazio Course, instructing the juniors on his approach to hitting different chips and pitches and answering questions.
From there, the juniors hit the course to use some of the knowledge they learned and played nine holes of golf. The format of the day was a two-person scramble with four teams for a total of eight players with three of four scores counting towards an aggregate score. Four teams played on the front nine and four teams played on the back nine.
\At the end of the day, the low aggregate score from the front nine would compete against the low aggregate score on the back nine in a shootout.
On the front nine, Jimmy Beers Golf shot 110 with the team of Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble and Aris Asher leading the way at 35 (-1). On the back nine, Westfield Country Club shot 111 with the team of Hamilton Miller and John Kaczka shooting the low round of the day at 31 (-5). With these scores, the two teams qualified for the post-round shootout to determine a winner.
All players from each team participated in the shootout, alternating shots from Jimmy Beers Golf and Westfield. The shot was 55-yards from just beyond the penalty area on hole 18 onto a front pin location.
In the final shot of the shootout, Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble hit a wedge to within tap-in range to take home the victory for Jimmy Beers Golf.
