The Northern Ohio Golf Association conducted U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship Qualifying for both Men and Women today at Kirtland Country Club in Willoughby. Some incredible stories came out of that joint session.
On the Women’s side, a pair of players shared the co-medalist honors, and with it earned the two qualifying spots for Stonewall Country Club in Elverson, PA. Christy Schultz of Rochester NY and Sabrina Coffman of Toledo both shot 3-over par 73 at Kirtland to earn their way into the 36th U.S. Women’s Mid-Am, three strokes clear of their closest pursuer.
On the Men’s side, players were fighting for one of three spots available to Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, New York for the 42nd U.S. Mid-Am.
Anthony Briggs of Lakewood earned medalist honors with a solid 2-under par 68 that had only one bogey in it.
At 69, Nolan Marks of Chagrin Falls took the second qualifying spot, but with roller-coaster effort of five bogeys, four birdies and an eagle.
But the story of the day was how the third qualifying spot on the Men’s side was won. Oberlin Golf Club’s Ben Hogan played great golf for the first 15 holes of his round, but finished bogey-double near the end to post an even par 70. After a couple hour wait, that score put Hogan into a five-for-one playoff starting on the 18th hole at Kirtland. But a hole-out nine iron from 150 yards on the first playoff hole quickly ended the day in a storybook way in Hogan’s favor.
