Finishing at or near the top in each of the three six-hole segments that make up the Joe Ungvary Sr. Memorial Jumble is always a great way to get into the mix for the overall title. And that’s exactly what Steve Blackburn Jr. and Howard Clendenin did on Saturday at Good Park.
Blackburn and Clendenin finished T2 in the Scramble Segment, T1 in the Better Ball Segment, and T2 in the Alternate Shot segment to finish in first place overall. Their segments of 4-under par, 3-under par and even par totaled 64 (-7), good for a two shot victory.
Justin Trzebuckowski and Allen Freeman matched the winner’s scores for the first two segments, but made a disappointing double-bogey 6 at the final hole in Alternate Shot to finish in a tie for second place, two shots back.
Late in the day, the team of Chase Helmling and Max Decheco posted a matching 5-under par 66. Starting with a pedestrian Scramble score of 2-under par, the made a strong comeback with a solid T1 in Better Ball at 3-under and a T2 score of even par in the Alternate Shot six.
The team of David Trier and Dean Cutlip jumped out to the early lead at the Ungvary, posting a sizzling 5-under par 19 in the Scramble Format to win that segment by one shot.
The Better Ball Segment ended in a four-way tie, with Mark Schneider + Josh Prok joining Clendenin/Blackburn, Trzebuckowski/Freeman and Helmling/Decheco at 3-under par for those six holes.
In the Alternate Shot segment, Phil Bojc and Justin Arens finished at 1-under par to top the field there, with six teams finishing T2 at even par.
In the Scramble and Better Ball Segments, skins were split on least-tied holes. But in the Alternate Shot, Danny Marr and Dave Canter made a birdie on 16 to sweep that segment’s skins pot.
