The Zoar Golf Tournament Series kicked off Sunday under a brand new format, 2-Man Shamble Better Ball, after a week delay due to snow the previous weekend. The weather was not much better this week; the round consisted of rain, sleet, and a little snow that was braved by 30 teams.
The Pittsburgh area team of Ryan Fichter and Paul Ajak eventually came away with the title.
Fichter and Ajck went out in 2-under par 34 and came home in a back nine low of 5-under par 31. They finished the day at the top of the leaderboard with a 7-under par 65 total to take the title by a single shot.
The Dover team of Tim Hepner and Eric Crone, along with the Canton area team of Mike Simpson and Dave Oates, shared second place honors at 6-under par 65.
Hepner and Crone started the day with birdies on holes 1, 2, 3 and 5, and it looked like they were going to lap the field. But they were only able to sneak in two more birdies the rest of the day to get to 6-under par (31-35). Simpson and Oates were more steady in their round, going out in 2-under par 34 and coming home in 4-under par 32.
The Cleveland area team of Ryan Stefanski and Jimmy Wild took fourth place alone at 5-under par 67.
The next event on the Tournament Series schedule is the Zoar Spring 2-Man Scramble on Saturday, April 23rd. Get your entries in quickly, this event is always sold-out.
