It took an under par score at Sand Ridge Golf Club to secure one of the three qualifying spots for the 67th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at the Kittansett Club in Marion, Massachusetts from August 27 to September 1, 2022.
Conducted by the Northern Ohio Golf Association along with the United States Golf Association, the players had to play around some wet conditions early and wind later in the round.
North Canton’s Jeff Mallette and David Brown of Canonsburg, PA finished as co-medalists, tying at 2-under par 70. Tom Jereb from Concord Township shot 1-under par to secure solo third place and the third qualifying spot.
“I made a few birdies and a double bogey and here I am,” Brown said. “Not much to say. I made some good putts today.”
Mallette shared similar sentiments to Brown and their rounds. “I made a bogey to start which isn’t so bad sometimes because it made me mad,” Mallette said. “I made a couple birdies and got a good break on 11 after missing the fairway and birding 10. Then I played par golf the rest of the way.”
There was a four player for two alternate spots playoff between Monty Guest, Robert Schustrich, Dave Antill and Brad Aitken. Antill secured the first alternate spot with a birdie on the first playoff hole and Guest secured the second alternate spot with a par on the second playoff hole.
The qualifiers will head to the 67th U.S. Senior Amateur at the Kittansett Club in Marion, Massachusetts from August 27 to September 1, 2022.
