RESULTS: 2022 Twin Lakes Spring 2-M Scramble

After Sunday, there are a handful of guys who need to head over and do some sports betting in Ohio by Caesars, or find a nearby Power Ball lottery terminal. Because they have a whole lot of skill and luck on their side at the moment.

Mike Simpson + Bobby Spino
Mike Simpson + Bobby Spino

The two players who fit this bill most closely are Bobby Spino and Mike Simpson.

The pair had not one but TWO HOLE-OUTS on the day, at two of the more challenging par-4 holes at The Fairways at Twin Lakes: on the par-4 sixth hole, where the pin was cut tight front-left on a sloping knob; and on the par-4 ninth hole, a dog-leg left that requires two well-struck and perfectly-placed shots just to get a look at birdie.

Simpson holed out a blind wedge shot up the hill from 44 yards out on the sixth. Then three holes later, Spino holed out a 7-iron from 170 yards on the ninth.

Then for good measure, they followed up each of those hole-outs with birdies the second time around to net two of the three Double Skins won on the day (aggregate score of the two trips around the 9-hole Twin Lakes layout). In fact, Spino nearly holed his second shot again at the 18th — so he really needs to get that big parlay wager laid down someplace.

Those two walk-off hole-outs left Simpson + Spino in a three-way tie for first place at 10-under par 60 (after sharing the top spot the day prior at the Fox Den 2-Man).

Jimmy Wild + Steve Blackburn Jr. shot a back nine 29 to get to 10-under par as well, albeit in the more traditional manner of 10 birdies and a couple of nice par saves to keep the round intact.

Allen Freeman + Justin Trzebuckowski also shot that same back nine score of 29 to record a round of 60 to tie at the top. But they made theirs with a bogey on the uphill par-3 11th hole, offset by a little bit of magic of their own in the middle of the back nine: Trzebuckowski dunked a 100 yard wedge shot that landed just above the hole then trickled in to earn a skin on the 14th.

And the hole-outs didn’t stop there. In fact, all but one of the seven skins won on the day were made with eagles!

Dave Oates had a hole-out on the shortened par-4 fourth hole with a wedge shot from 56 yards, earning he and Rob Wakeling a skin. “We had a better chance of holing a shot than we did making a putt,” Oates lamented later.

On the funnel-bowl shaped fifth hole, Eric Coven + Dax Bramwell earned a hole-out eagle skin. They also earned a skin with an eagle on the par-5 third hole — which netted them the third Double Skin awarded on the day after securing their birdie the second time around.

Freeman + Trzebuckowski took the day’s only birdie skin with a back-door bomb of a putt on the swooping par-3 17th with the hole cut back-left well up the slope.

Thanks to Bryan Harvey and the rest of the staff at The Fairways at Twin Lakes for getting the event played in between the rain showers, and for providing a golf course that was in great condition for an early spring tournament.

The Fairways at Twin Lakes will present a Fall Scramble later in the year; watch the Northern Ohio Golf Tournament Calendar for details and registration information.
