Record low scores highlight OGGF Showcase
With one of the biggest fields in tournament history, high school girl golfers at the 21st Ohio Girls Golf Foundation Showcase on July 25 also carded some of the lowest scores in its history.
“On a picture-perfect weather day, we were thrilled to host 27 schools from across the state,” says OGGF Executive Director Lynne Plaisance.
Individuals and teams mixed things up with interactive clinics focusing on putting, chipping and bunker work led by local PGA and LPGA professionals, as well as an on-course clinic led by tournament headliner LPGA tour professional Barb Mucha and PGA professional Jimmy Beers exploring the importance of the mental process to the game.
At the end of the day, Clare Liu, an incoming freshman from Magnificat, shot a record-tying low score of four-under par, 68, to take medalist honors. She finished her round with back-to-back eagles. Coming in second place was Dixon Hill from Hathaway Brown with a 69, and tied for third were Cammy Reed from Magnificat and Ella Wong from Hawken, with 71.
Teams competing in the event included Aurora, Avon, Avon Lake, Boardman, Hathaway Brown, Highland, Hudson, Independence, Kent Roosevelt, Lexington, Magnificat and Medina.
Magnificat teams nabbed the number one and two positions with scores of 302 and 323 strokes, and Hathaway Brown came in third place with a 338.
During the event, OGGF Scholarship Committee Member Beth Casey presented six of the eight annual winners who were in attendance: Calista Baird from Sheridan High School, who will attend Shawnee State University; Angela Dodson from Shaker Heights High School, who will attend Savannah State University; Sara Hickey from Mapleton High School, who will attend Cleveland State University; Katelyn Reynolds from Colonel Crawford High School, who will attend Ashland University; Erin Strouse from Louisville High School, who will attend Malone University; and Noelle Trobek from Hubbard High School, who will attend Youngstown State University. Other scholarship winners this year who were not in attendance include Jessica Morlock from Columbia High School, who will attend Georgetown University; and Sophia Rosa from Perry High School, who will attend Walsh University.
Applications for the 2023 scholarships, as well as applications for financial aid to attend golf tournaments will be available soon at OGGF.org.
The Foundation’s mission is to encourage, sponsor and support the game of golf for girls by providing college scholarships, golf training programs and financial assistance.
